Application of PCTG materials in cosmetic packaging

1. Understanding PCTG

PCTG is a transparent plastic and an amorphous copolyester. The commonly used comonomer of PCTG is 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM), and its full name is polyethylene terephthalate-1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol ester. It is a product of terephthalic acid (PTA), ethylene glycol (EG) and 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol (CHDM) by ester exchange. Compared with PET, it has more 1,4-cyclohexanedimethanol comonomer, and compared with PCT, it has more ethylene glycol comonomer. Therefore, the performance of PCTG is very different from that of PET and PCT. PCTG is a non-crystalline copolyester. With the increase of CHDM in the copolymer, the melting point decreases, the glass transition temperature increases, the crystallinity decreases, and finally an amorphous polymer is formed. Generally, the content of CHDM in PCTG is more suitable at 30%-40%.

It has good viscosity, transparency, color, chemical resistance, and stress whitening resistance. It can be quickly thermoformed or extruded and blow molded. The viscosity is better than acrylic acid. PCTG is an amorphous copolyester. Its products are highly transparent and have excellent impact resistance. They are particularly suitable for molding thick-walled transparent products. It has excellent processing and molding performance and can be designed in any shape according to the designer’s intention. It can adopt traditional extrusion, injection molding, blow molding and vacuum molding methods. It can be widely used in sheet materials, high-performance shrink films, bottles and profiles, cosmetic packaging and other markets. At the same time, it has excellent secondary processing performance and can be conventionally machined.

2. Application of PCTG in the cosmetic packaging industry

PCTG has the same transparency as glass and density close to glass, good gloss, chemical corrosion resistance, impact resistance, and easy processing. It can be injection molded, injection stretch blow molded and extrusion blow molded. It can also produce unique shapes, appearances and special effects, such as bright colors, frosting, marble texture, metallic luster, etc. It can also be overlapped with other polyesters, elastic plastics or ABS for injection molding.

Products include perfume bottles and caps, cosmetic bottles and caps, lipstick tubes, cosmetic boxes, deodorant packaging, talcum powder bottles and eyeliner sets. PETG injection molding products include medical devices such as filters, Eustachian tubes, tube connectors, pumps, clips and dialysis equipment. Household utensils such as cups, salad bowls, salt shakers, pepper shakers, etc. have excellent transparency, gloss, good toughness, processability and excellent colorability.

PCTG is a highly transparent copolyester plastic raw material. It has high transparency, good toughness and impact strength, excellent low-temperature toughness, high tear resistance and good processability, and excellent chemical resistance. It can be processed by traditional extrusion, injection molding, blow molding and blister molding. It is widely used in sheet materials, high-performance shrink films, bottles and profiles; it can be used to produce toys, household utensils and medical supplies; it has passed the US FDA food contact standards and can be used in food, medicine, cosmetics packaging and other fields.
